Libya seeks Jordan help in fighting ex-regime officials

Libya wants Amman to help fight remnants of slain dictator Muammar Qaddafi’s regime if found in Jordan, a government statement said on Wednesday as the two nations vowed to boost their ties.

Libya is “looking forward for Jordanian help in fighting remnants of the old regime if they are found in Jordan,” the statement quoted interim Prime Minister Abdel Rahim al-Kib as telling his Jordanian counterpart Awn Khasawneh at a meeting late Tuesday.

He said Jordan’s help in this issue will help “maintain security inside Libya.”

Khasawneh was on an official visit to Tripoli on Tuesday and held series of meetings with Libyan officials, including Kib and Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the head of Libya’s ruling National Transitional Council.
Jordan has been a strong supporter of the new Libyan rulers since the early months of the anti-Qaddafi revolution which erupted in February 2011.

The Sunni Arab country has also signed a memorandum of understanding to train about 10,000 former rebels who helped topple Qaddafi in order to integrate them into the Libyan interior ministry.

Libya chose Jordan to train the fighters because of Amman’s experience in training Iraqi police with the assistance of the United States.

Libya and Jordan vowed to further boost their ties in several fields, including human resources, the statement from Kib’s office said.

“Jordan will cooperate in the growth and building up of the new Libya,” the statement quoted Khasawneh as saying when Kib thanked him for Amman’s help “in the blessed 17th February revolution.”
