Fezzan region (deep south)
On 25 July, Libyan media reports stated that tribal sheikhs and elders in the Wadi Al Shatti region in the west of the country refused to recognise armed groups belonging to tribes in the region, instead casting their support to the National Army. Both the ministries of interior and defence have asked the elders for their help against unauthorised armed groups.
The al-Kufra region in the southeast of the country has seen little reported activity over the past week. The region has seen regular violent clashes between pro-government militia’s and Tabu fighters over recent months, particularly in the lead in to the recent elections. The onset of Ramadan is likely to be one contributing factor to the reduction in reported activity; however the underlying issues and tensions between the ethnic groups remain. It is likely that further clashes will occur post Ramadan if not before.
