A military base in Mizdah, 150km south of the capital, came under attack on 3 August by unknown assailants, leaving one guard and four attackers dead. The base had been holding a number of illegal immigrants, raising speculation that the attackers were also illegal immigrants and others involved in human smuggling. On the night of 4 August armed members of the Mashashya and Kantrar tribes clashed in Mizdah. Six Mashashya fighters and one Kantrar fighter were reported dead. Residents are also reported to have been leaving Mizdah out of fear of escalating violence. The Jebel Nafusa region is on high alert.
On 5 August Libyan security forces were reported to have killed three armed men suspected of being behind recent failed bomb plots. According to reports, security forces confronted the three men inside a farm near Aziziya, 40 km southwest of Tripoli. Five security force members were also reported to have been injured in the exchange of fire.
On Sunday 5 August, unknown assailants attacked a compound of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) with grenades and rockets in Misratah, 180km east of the capital. The ICRC claimed that several aid workers were inside their residence when it came under attack. No one was hurt, but damage to the building was extensive. The ICRC subsequently suspended its operations in Misratah and Benghazi. This was the fifth time in less than three months that attacks have been directed against the ICRC in Libya.
Libyan media reported that the southern Libyan-Tunisian border crossing at Wazen-Dahiba was closed by Libyan authorities on 5 August, following weekend clashes between Libyans and Tunisians. The conflict began with a verbal altercation on 3 August which then sparked clashed between civilians in the area. A Libyan vehicle on the Tunisian side of the border in Dahiba was attacked, as were three Tunisian vehicles on the Libyan side. Libyan authorities stated that they had closed the border to prevent the situation escalating further.
