The President of the Venice Commission, Mr. Gianni Buquicchio, accompanied by the member of the Venice Commission from Tunisia, Mr. Rafaa Ben Achour, the member of the Venice Commission from Malta, Mr. Michael Frendo, and a representative of the Venice Commission Secretariat, Mr. Serguei Kuznetsov, visited Libya from 7 - 9 January, 2014 at the invitation of the President of the Legal and Constitutional Committee of the General National Congress, Mr.Omar Abulifa.
The Venice Commission delegation held fruitful discussions with the President of the General National Congress, Mr. Nouri Abusahmain, members of the General National Congress, the Minister of Justice, Mr. Salah Marghani, the President of the Supreme Court, Judge Kamal Dahan, and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The European Commission for Democracy through Law, better known as the Venice Commission, is the Council of Europe's advisory body on constitutional matters. The role of the Venice Commission is to provide legal advice to its member states and to assist states wishing to bring their legal and institutional structures into line with European Standards and international experience in the fields of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
