The EU has welcomed the appointment of Bernardino León as the new Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
In May, Bernardino León was appointed personal Special Envoy for Libya by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton, and also served since June 2011 as EU's Special Representative for the Southern Mediterranean.
A statement issued on 14 August said:
"I warmly congratulate Bernardino León on his appointment as the new Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
"As the EU's Special Representative for the Southern Mediterranean and as my Special Envoy for Libya, he has been instrumental in our support for the UN's central role in coordinating international efforts for the success of the Libyan transition.”
The statement reiterated the importance of an inclusive Libyan political dialogue and urged all parties to actively cooperate with UNSMIL to facilitate a cease-fire and the re-launch of the political process.
