The American Ambassador to Libya, Deborah Jones (pictured), has announced that she is leaving Twitter.
Her decision follows the reaction to her tweet yesterday: "Terrible news today from #Tarhouna where 8 innocent displaced #Tawergha killed in air strikes. This violence serves no one's interests."
This was met with a stream of criticism and abuse, leading the Ambassador to abandon Twitter as a communications medium: "I have concluded it is best to cease efforts to communicate via Twitter insofar as it distracts from our goal of peace & stability 4 #Libya."
The embassy, now working from Malta, will continue to post official statements on its Facebook site.
According to a report from Libya Herald, the ambassador is due to leave her post this summer.
