A statement from Libya's internationally-recognised government has said that a top Islamist militant has been killed in a US air strike in the eastern city of Ajdabiya.
BBC News reports that Mokhtar Belmokhtar ordered the deadly attack on the In Amenas gas plant in Algeria two years ago, in which 40 people were killed.
He was a former senior figure in al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), but left to form his own 'al-Murabitoun' militia.
