A UN Security Council report says that fuel smuggling is “providing a significant source of revenue for local armed groups and criminal networks.”
According to a report from Times of Malta, the mastermind is Libyan national Fahmi Ben Khalifa, who co-owns ADJ Trading with former Malta international footballer Darren Debono and an Egyptian.
Spanish, French and Maltese officials have begun tracking the movements of vessels in the Mediterranean, hoping to stop the illegal trade.
