The Netherlands invest 1.65 US$ million in UNDP-UNSMIL Joint Programme on Policing and Rule of Law in Libya
Ambassador of the Netherlands to Libya, H.E. Mr. Eric Strating, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Director in Libya, Ms. Noura Hamladji, signed an agreement today to boost security and the rule of law in Libya.
In a signing ceremony that took place at the Dutch Embassy to Libya, The Netherlands Government committed 1.65 US$ million to advance peace and stability in Libya through an initiative jointly launched by UNDP and UNSMIL.
The project aims to enhance national capacities to advance safety and security in the capital through a public-oriented policing and rule of law services. Assisting the Libyan Ministries of Interior and Justice to improve the effectiveness of law enforcement, prison services, local police and criminal justice institutions is the main focus of this joint programme, whilst also working to advance technical and policy options on reintegration of armed groups into society.
During the event, Ms. Noura Hamladji, UNDP Libya Country Director, stated:
“Capacity building of police and rule of law institutions is a fundamental part of UNDP mandate and one of our main priorities for supporting Libya’s transition to a stable and resilient country. This joint programme will play a critical role in ensuring Libyan people feel safe.”
For his part H.E. Ambassador Eric Strating highlighted the importance of improving the security situation in Tripoli and the Libyan authorities’ ownership of the program. He also mentioned:
“Supporting the state of Libya and further develop its institutions, is a priority for the government of the Netherlands. The Libyan people deserve to live in a safe, secure and just environment. The Netherlands is committed to assist Libya in strengthening the rule of law institutions, particularly now that we will soon be a member of the UN Security Council (as part of the split term arrangement with Italy). This will give us an ideal opportunity to exert influence at the highest level in the international arena and to put important themes such as ‘the rule of law’ on the agenda.”
Project implementation will begin January 2018 in Tripoli, and it is expected to be scaled elsewhere across the country.
