Panel Discussion: Can Libya Step Back from the Abyss?

Chatham House, London

16th March, 2016, 18:00-19:00

Participants

  • Mary Fitzgerald, Journalist
  • Claudia Gazzini, Senior Analyst, Libya, International Crisis Group
  • Wolfram Lacher, Middle East and Africa Associate, Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik
  • Chair: Elham Saudi, Associate Fellow, International Law Programme and Middle East and North Africa Programme, Chatham House

Five years on from the Libyan revolution, the country is failing as a state and has lacked a unified government since summer 2014. The country has been split between two rival governments, the General National Congress in Tripoli and the House of Representatives in Tobruk.

The ongoing political instability and growing threat of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) poses a threat to Libya’s national and economic stability.

As the UN-backed negotiations for the establishment of a Government of National Accord continues, the panel will discuss the political dynamics at play in Libya and consider what it would take for a unified government to succeed.

They will also assess the growing threat of extremist groups, as well as the role of the international community in supporting political stability and transition in Libya.
